A Week of Christmas Books–Chapter Books & Middle Grades

I don’t know why, but this group of books tends to get left out of most list I’ve seen. There are so many timeless classics and  classic characters that should not be overlooked.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever

Barbara Robinson has created a classic with this wonderful tale.

The Herdmans are the worst kids in the history of the world. They lie, steal, smoke cigars, swear, and hit little kids. So no one is prepared when this outlaw family invades church one Sunday and decides to take over the annual Christmas pageant.

None of the Herdmans has ever heard the Christmas story before. Their interpretation of the tale — the Wise Men are a bunch of dirty spies and Herod needs a good beating — has a lot of people up in arms. But it will make this year’s pageant the most unusual anyone has seen and, just possibly, the best one ever.

Christmas After All: The Great Depression Diary of Minnie Swift, Indianapolis, Indiana 1932 (Dear America Series)

The genuine authenticity of the Dear America Series, gives kids a true peek into the past. Kathryn Lasky has written many books in this series.

At the age of twelve, Minnie Swift is living through one of toughest times in America’s history, The Great Depression. She keeps a detailed diary over the span of one Christmas month. Reflecting the sadness — but also the optimism — that characterized that time, this is an intimate portrait of a midwestern family’s days and nights, ups and downs, triumphs and losses. It is the story of one family’s persevering spirit. The Christmas Spirit.

Little House in the Big Woods

My list wouldn’t be complete without at least one Laura Ingalls Wilder book. This is the first in the Little House Series. This would be fun for the whole family to read together.

Laura Ingalls’s story begins in 1871 in a little log cabin on the edge of the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Four-year-old Laura lives in the little house with her Pa, her Ma, her sisters Mary and Carrie, and their trusty dog, Jack.

Pioneer life is sometimes hard, since the family must grow or catch all their own food as they get ready for the cold winter. But it is also exciting as Laura and her folks celebrate Christmas with homemade toys and treats, do the spring planting, bring in the harvest, and make their first trip into town. And every night they are safe and warm in their little house, with the happy sound of Pa’s fiddle sending Laura and her sisters off to sleep.

And so begins Laura Ingalls Wilder’s beloved story of a pioneer girl and her family. The nine Little House books have been cherished by generations of readers as both a unique glimpse into America’s frontier past and a heartwarming, unforgettable story.

Santa Paws

When I found these books, I couldn’t leave them off. Buttercup loves, loves, loves dogs. This is a multiple book series. All animal lovers will find this series something they can’t live without.

Performing daring rescues and other brave acts, a homeless puppy earns the name Santa Paws and is adopted by a loving family.

Gift Horse (Winnie the Horse Gentler #6)

Here’s another story for your animal lover from renowned children’s author Dandi Daley Mackall.

Twelve-year-old Winnie Willis has a way with horses. Along with her dad and sister, Lizzy, Winnie is learning how to live without her mom–who was also a natural horse gentler. As Winnie teaches her horses about unconditional love and blind trust, God shows Winnie that he can be trusted as well. Readers will be hooked on the series’ vivid characters, whose quirky personalities fill Winnie’s life with friendship and adventure.Gift Horse: When a mysterious horse, soon discovered to be sick and with foal, appears in Winnie’s pasture, she’s suddenly faced with life and death. Just as Christmas arrives, Winnie learns an unforgettable lesson about sacrificial love and God’s Christmas gift to the world.

A Christmas Carol: A Young Reader’s Edition of the Classic Holiday Tale

A classic every child should be familiar with.

Remarkable, sumptuous artwork by top children’s illustrator Christian Birmingham enhances this faithful abridgment of the Dickens classic.
